Major airport in China using advanced baggage handling system
BNP

A 700,000m2 Terminal 5, with an annual handling capacity of 50 million passengers, is planned in Xi’An, China, to meet the rising demand in this capital of 13 dynasties. A ground transportation center (GTC) will be built along with the terminal to provide passenger services connecting to the subway, highway and railways.

BNP was engaged to carry out concept design, detailed design, simulation, tender documents and construction administration of the BHS – a fully automated ICS-based system. Domestic and international bags are transported on different belt conveyor lines to the top loaders in accordance with China security and customs regulations. Check-in islands are provided in the GTC building, where passengers from the parking garage and public transportation can check their bags conveniently. The hotel check-in facility and city check-in unloading area are also included in the design.

The system will run from the terminal check-in level to the basement, where it houses a 3,000-position early bag storage (EBS) using a lift and shuttle system. This arrangement can provide the required number of positions in a smaller footprint. BNP designed the main sortation system below the apron so that workers in the apron-level bag room experience a better environment.

The system installation is expected to be completed in 2025. This terminal will become one of the biggest in China once it is in operation.
